On July 28, 2022, we reached Overshoot Day, the date from which humanity has consumed all the resources that the Earth can replenish in one year. Every year, this date moves back and it is important to act. At our level, there are actions that we can take to limit our consumption. Limiting food waste and excess consumption is one of them.
That's why, today, , I want to share with you my little tips to avoid this food waste.
My anti food waste ideas
- So, of course, we all know the recipe for French toast with leftover stale bread, or with brioche. It's simple to make and so good, I'm a fan.
- When I was little, my mother made dumplings with the leftover vegetables and meat when she made broth. Yum ! So I carried on the tradition and, at home, we love it.
- In this heat, the bananas ripen very quickly. When they start to get too ripe, I make a banana cake and when it's still warm I put my homemade spread on it to make a frosting (my daughter loves it). In addition, I put my banana peelings in the compost. Due to their richness in starch, fibre, nitrogenous proteins and vitamins, this makes them a powerful and free organic fertilizer.
- With all the damaged fruits, you can make sorbets. At the moment, with this heat, it is refreshing. By the way, if you haven't yet tried our recipe for pear sorbet with Mix digestion, this is the opportunity.
- When I have damaged apples, I like to bake them in the oven with a knob of butter and a little jam.
- We love fries and mashed potatoes. But do you know that it is possible to make chips with potato peelings? Wash them well before peeling them, then a little oil and spices. A passage in the oven and you're done (it also works with other vegetables such as carrots or parsnips). By the way, you can take inspiration from our recipe from vegetable-fries.
- Speaking of mashed potatoes, with leftover meat or fish, I love making a parmentier or a brandade. Accompanied by a salad, it is a treat.
- Cookies that have been left in the open package for a while lose their crunch. Instead of throwing them away, you can very well make cookies with them. Children like to get their hands dirty, so this is an opportunity to organize a family pastry moment.
- With the damaged tomatoes, I make a superb bolognese or I cook them in soup.
- When I make little Parmesan Cracker Puffs, I always have some Parmesan mixture left over. So, I use a glass to form tiles. 2-3 minutes in the oven and it's ready!
Here are some recipe ideas to avoid wasting what's in our fridge or in our cupboards. There are surely some that you already do at home, but if I could give you more ideas then I'm delighted.
I still have a few recipes up my sleeve, I'll save them for a future blog post ;)
Don't hesitate to share your anti-waste solutions with us in the comments. We are very fond of new proposals.
